What are the risk factors for gum disease?

Some factors and bad habits increase the risks of getting gum disease.

Poor oral hygiene :
Failure to have proper brushing equipment and brushing technique generates risks of developing gum disease.

Environmental factors :
Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, unhealthy diet, certain medications or stress can affect the health of your gums.

Genetic factors :
You must be careful when members of your family are already suffering from periodontal disease.

Age and gender :
Aging exposes more to gum problems. But it is important to take care of your gums at any age to prevent the appearance of diseases. It is also relevant to note that men tend to be more affected by gum problems than women.

Hormonal changes :
Pregnant women need to be especially careful with their gums, as well as postmenopausal women.

Chronic diseases :
People with cardiovascular disease, diabetes or obesity must be vigilant as well.
